Hygge at Home – Interior Design Tips

Provenance Woven Wood Shades in the Living Room
Provenance® Woven Wood Shades in the Living Room

Although winter in Florida isn’t generally as chilly as in much of the rest of the country, we still experience the sensation of seasonal change. Which means that elements of comfort are welcome, especially when they bring additional benefits. At Treasure Coast Window Fashions serving Jensen Beach, we’d like to introduce you to the Danish practice of “hygge” (pronounced “hyoo-guh”) which encourages people to slow their pace and feel connected to the world and the people who matter to them. See how you can bring hygge to your home!

The Benefits of Hygge

According to the curator of Danish American culture at the Museum of Danish America, Hygge helps people “find a healthier work-life balance, to be more in the moment, to build interpersonal relationships, and to turn off digital distractions.” The idea of hygge began as a lifestyle movement, but it has since evolved to encompass a home’s ambience and décor. It’s about what’s comfortable for you and anyone in your home. For example, comfortable clothes, such as athleisurewear instead of jeans for both you and your guests. It’s about keeping things simple—so when you have people over, don’t worry about serving a huge platter of food—go with the minimum and focus on being together. It’s about the things that are calming and restorative, like lit candles, comfy textiles, and elements of nature inside.

Take Time for Yourself

Hygge isn’t all about entertaining; it’s also about doing things for you, like knitting or reading a book. So why not set up a cozy nook? Find a good corner to place a plush armchair, add a good reading lamp, and be sure you have a place to rest your warm cider or cocoa. If you have a bay window, add plush pillows and the right window fashions to feel ensconced. For example, Provenance® Woven Wood Shades will create a sense of the great outdoors while melding the windows together. Or choose Duette® Cellular Shades, which can bring a layer of insulation to your window. And even consider adding drapery to block off the bay window and make that nook feel like its own room. No matter the style, always go for what feels the most comfortable. That’s where you’ll achieve hygge.
